Knitters are nice people

Posted by Fairy Yarnmother on October 22, 2011

I saw this in a blog and thought it was a hoax, afterall……. why would penguins need sweaters; but it’s true.  So now I want to knit this penguin jumper, but I’ll have to convert the pattern for the knitting machine!  Suppose they’ll like hand dyed yarns?  This is from the ABC news  blog, http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/10/new-zealand-penguins-in-need-of-sweaters/.  Follow the Skeinz website for the pattern at the end.

A yarn store in New Zealand is making an unusual request that is pulling at the heart-strings of the world—they are asking people to sew knit sweaters for penguins affected by the country’s oil spill.

The “penguin jumpers” are intended to keep the birds warm until they are well enough to be scrubbed down and to prevent them from consuming oil on their feathers while preening.

The yarn store is called Skeinz and is located in Napier, New Zealand. They posted the request along with instructions and patterns on their website and have already received a “deluge” of jumpers.

“It’s really precious and overwhelming,” the store posted on its blog along with photos of piles of penguin sweaters.

On Oct. 5, a cargo ship ran aground in New Zealand, pouring 350 tons of oil into the ocean. The accident has been regarded as the country’s worst environmental disaster in decades.

More than 1,000 sea birds have already died as a result of the spill, including birds from the country’s native blue penguin population.

Oil can be extremely harmful to penguins, whose feathers are very different from other birds. They have very dense and tiny feathers of different lengths that stick onto them like Velcro, creating a waterproof pseudo-wetsuit.

“Basically, when you get even a drop of oil on these birds, it opens up a channel so water can penetrate,” Kevin McGowan of the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology told ABCNews.com. “It’s like a hole in their wetsuit.”

McGowan said the sweaters could be the equivalent of the plastic cones sometimes put on dogs to prevent them from scratching stitches after surgery or poking at head injuries.

“When they’re wet, the cold can penetrate, especially in water,” McGowan said. “You don’t want anything to penetrate through that wetsuit armor and oil is a pretty bad thing.”

Specifications and instructions for the penguin PJ’s can be found on the Skeinz website as well as the address where penguin-loving knitters can send them.

Spring 2011 Knitting Events

Posted by Fairy Yarnmother on February 9, 2011

Be sure to check out the following knitting events in Wisconsin ( I’m vending as Fairy Yarnmother at all of them)  (be sure to stop by and say hello.)  :

The Janesville Knit-it is on Feb. 18th and 19th in Milton, WI.  Here’s the website, http://jakg.org/id18.html to register.  It’s put on by the Janesville area knitting guild and has lots of fun things to keep you busy.   There’s a huge room downstairs where you can sit, knit and people watch all day.   Punxsutawney Phil (hopefully that’s the spelling) didn’t see his shadow on groundhog’s day;  that means that winter is officially ended and we can all start enjoying being out again.  This is the first show of the year and it’s so much fun to see what people have been working on during the cold weather.  You’ll like the facilities too, very sunny and uplifting!

Sheep in the City is the next week after the Knit-in, Feb 25th-27th in Oak Creek, WI.  Here’s their website, http://web.mac.com/jmassie1/Sheep_in_the_City/Welcome.html.  Jan Massie has put together another great show this year, so don’t miss it.  Jan has lots of photos to look at so you can get the gist of what that show is like.  It’s a relaxed atmosphere where you can shop, spin, knit, make friends and most of all have fun.

Madison Knit-in is on Mar. 19th in Madison, WI.  That show is put on by the Madison Knitting Guild and here’s their website, http://www.madisonknittersguild.org/knitin.html.  This is my 2nd year vending at the event; before that I took classes at the knit-in so I’m familiar with both ends of the show.  It’s a well orchestrated event; they get some really big names to come out to speak, like Lily Chin and Jean Moss.  The Madison guild has 400+ members so they have lots of volunteers to make it great.  You’ll like being around that many people, they’re friendly and helpful and yet they’ll treat you like  family.

Wisconsin Spin-in is on Apr. 7th-9th in Pewaukee, WI.  http://www.wispinin.org/ is their website.  This show is put on by the Friendly, Feisty Fiber Guild.  Luci Williams has done a great job organizing the event; they’ve got some interesting classes scheduled and lots of great vendors!  There’ll even be live music there to spin by (one year it was hammered dulcimers).  I’m sure everyone will find something to enjoy at this show.   This is the first year that the event has been scheduled in the spring and we’ve (by we I mean southeast Wi) been lucky to have the event in our area for a couple of years now.
