FiberArtCafe + Fairy Yarnmother

A Blog about Knitting and Fiber Art

About

Thanks for checking out my blog site.

I’ve never had a blog before, this is a first for me, but I feel I’ve got lots of interesting things to talk about, so I’m going to give it a try.  I do lots of things besides just knit, but have got to admit I’m a fiber fanatic.  I love to hand knit, but that’s toooooooo slow….. so I’ve also got 6 knitting machines (two Brother 965i’s, a bulky, a Studio 360 and an LK150) and an antique circular knitting machine (a Legear 400).   I’ve been making my own knitting patterns for years under the name Fiber Art Cafe, and I’m an indie dyer of yarn and roving under the name of Fairy Yarnmother.  I’ve got tons of yarn (no, really, tons) and I sell on-line at http://www.FairyYarnmother.com (please check it out, by the way) and on etsy.  I’ve also got the nicest, most patient husband in the world.  He’s a photographer named Jim.  He loves to garden and take pictures.  We live in an old house with 60+ year old wiring and drafty windows but we wouldn’t have it any other way.  We’ve also got an 75 lb standard poodle named Hans and 2 attack kitties, named Charlie and Fiona.  They’re all independent until there’s a thunderstorm or a noise from a firecracker and then they are all my babies jockeying for lap positions.  It’s quite a mix of animals and our lives are never dull.

I’ve got one more thing to say.  Please play nice and do not reproduce text, patterns or images without my express permission.  All of the content on this site is my intellectual property and the way I make my income so again, please be fair and play nice.

Best regards,

Susan Forbes

    Hi, Susan:
I am a CSM enthusiast who is unable, unfortunately, to attend your crank-in this weekend.
I have been trying to track down information about a CSM group that meets monthly in Madison at one of the public library branches.
Would you happen to know of the group and have any contact information?
    Thank you in advance,
    Martha Shea

P.S. Did you used to run a yarn shop in Columbus?

  3. Hi Martha,

I sent you an email in Facebook about the Madison library group, you must not have gotten it so I’ll give you a call tomorrow.

what fun you must have with your sock blanks. Never in my wildest dreams did I think of just painting them as a painting. I have done some just bands/spots of colors, but yours are magnificent. Since I never get around to getting anyone to do mine up in socks, the blanks would be a lot prettier if I painted them as pictures.
So many folks that I wish lived closer, but will have to rely on Internet for “closer”. I have two knitting machines…..going to take that up when I get older……….and older is here, but I have little or no time…Michael…..one of your “local crankers” sent your info on to me so I could have a look…….and look I have. Wonderful………and Congratulations on such beauty…….

  5. Thank you for the kind words. :)

I have just recently purchased an antique sock maker, it is a Circular Gearhart Knitting Machine from the the early 1930s I think. It works and I have cranked it a couple of times, but I would like to order more needles for it. Where is a good place to buy parts for these machines? I have two babydoll sheep and learning to spin their wool, I have rovings just waiting for me, can’t seem to make the spinning wheel cooperate either, I need lessons. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so am quite a distance from you, wish I was closer.
    Mary Beth

  59. Hi Mary Beth,
I’ve got a Legare which uses different needles, but I’ve looked up a few places to buy needles for you. You have to be careful and get the right needles for your machine. Here’s a link for Pat at AngoraValley, http://www.angoravalley.com/sockmachines/accessories.html (she’s got a huge selection and is very knowledgeable)
and here’s one for the new Gearhart being made, http://stores.erlbachergearhart.com/-strse-Accessories-cln-Needles/Categories.bok (I’m sure they would only sell gearhart needles).

this is a yahoo group that has interesting posts, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sockknittingmachinefriends. Check out the groups for CSMs, there’s lots of them. there is a group that meets in central MI, but I don’t have a contact for them. Roxana Baechle is in michigan, she gives classes. You could go to the MI lamb and wool festival or any fiber festival. there may be vendors there selling machines and parts. At least you’d be able to get contacts for people

Good luck with your machine! I’ll let you know if I find any other info for you.

    :) Susan
